History

1929

Originally opening in 1929, Eastside Market was a grocery and meat market serving the present day Victor Heights, then a predominantly Italian immigrant enclave of Downtown LA. As community demand shifted during the 1930’s and 1940’s, Eastside expanded the business joining forces with “Pontrelli & Laricchia Sausage Company” and together they capitalized on the demand for wholesale and retail foods.

1959

In 1959, Johnny Angiuli began to work for Eastside Market. He began his career as a clean-up and delivery boy and eventually learned the butcher trade, which allowed him to work the counter serving customers. By 1965, Eastside Market was the last standing of the original four Italian markets and with changes again in the community, Johnny recognized an opportunity.

1959

By 1974 Johnny and his brother Frank Angiuli became owners and evolved the business by eliminating the grocery market and creating the model that still lives on today – counter sandwich service which has since become the landmark for our sandwiches.

Today, Eastside Italian Deli takes a step toward its next evolution – a second location in the current space occupied by Rocco’s Italian Market and Deli, a neighborhood Italian Deli, located in the heart of Los Feliz Village. “At our second location, we plan to build on what Rocco’s began and we will bring the tradition and quality that our customers base knows and loves from the original Eastside;” said Vito Angiuli, one of the partner owners of Eastside. “Rocco’s has served the Los Feliz community for the last ten years filling a need for a local Italian spot and we are confident we can continue the legacy they started,” added Anthony Angiuli, another Eastside partner owner. By opening this second location in the Los Feliz area, Eastside will continue to serve their loyal customer base who span from local Chinatown mainstays to new neighborhood millennials, street sweepers, cops, firefighters, detectives, bankers and lawyers – all loyal customers! It is this mix of repeat clientele that demonstrates that the great equalizer for all these different groups and communities is good food made from simple ingredients. “We will be a place that welcomes everyone in Los Feliz just like we did in DTLA,” said Rocco Angiuli, the third Eastside partner owner. The Eastside team is excited about the opportunity that a new Los Feliz location brings and the tremendous responsibility they have in filling the large shoes Rocco’s is leaving in their care.
